«I'm Your Man» estreia em Junho
«O filme «Leonard Cohen I`m Your Man», dedicado à vida e obra do músico canadiano, estreia em Junho no Reino Unido e EUA.

«I'm Your Man» hoje em ante-estreia nacional
Ocorre hoje no festival Indie Lisboa a ante-estreia nacional do documentário «LEONARD COHEN: I’M YOUR MAN»:
«O documentário LEONARD COHEN: I’M YOUR MAN, assinado por Lian Lunson, é exibido hoje, em antestreia nacional, no âmbito do programa IndieMusic, uma das novidades da programação da 3ª edição do IndieLisboa. O filme entrelaça dois fios narrativos: por um lado, um concerto tributo realizado em Sydney, na Austrália, e com interpretações incendiárias de alguns dos seus mais ilustres discípulos (Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Antony, Beth Orton e Jarvis Cocker, entre outros) e algumas entrevistas reveladoras com Cohen a reflectir sobre o seu passado e processo criativo.»

Crianças de Chernobyl!
Esta semana recordaram-se os 20 anos sobre a maior tragédia nuclear de Humanidade, ocorrida em Chernobyl.
A explosão produziu uma radiação 100 vezes superiores às bombas atómicas lançadas sobre Hiroshima e Nagasaki durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial, atingindo grande parte da europa de leste, Russia e Reino Unido. Mais de 9 milhões de pessoas foram afectadas pela tragédia.
Há vários anos que os U2 colaboram com o Chernobyl Children's Project, fundado por Adi Roche, promovendo vários programas para ajudar as vitias da catástrofe. Um dos projectos, é dar a oportunidade das crianças passarem férias na terra natal da banda, Irlanda.
Ali Hewson, esposa de Bono, é uma das representantes do projecto, tendo conseguido já muitas ajudas para as crianças.

U2 doam guitarra contra o cancro
Os U2 doaram uma guitarra autografada à Macmillan Cancer Relief:
«Caring soccer ace Shay Given aims to net a charity fortune in memory of his mum.
Thirteen of his Newcastle team-mates will don the latest in designer gear at a charity bash for Macmillan Cancer Relief attended by patron Shay.
He lost his mum to cancer when he was just five and often meets nurses and patients in his role with the charity.
Republic of Ireland captain Shay has organised a charity auction which includes a round of golf with himself and Alan Shearer and a signed guitar from Irish rock stars U2.
"The boys from U2 have been very kind and have donated another signed guitar. Patrick Kluivert paid about £28,000 for one last year and we're hoping for a similar amount.»

«You Two is a band formerly known as U-Boat, U-Lalalalaaa, Goo-ratch-a-loogie, U3, U4, The Number Twos and Ireland Is Our Marketing Niche. At one stage, rumours abounded that they may also have been founding members of Baccara, the people responsible for the classic opera, "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie".
They are one of the most successful and misunderstood popular music acts spanning the 19th century through to the 22nd, and possibly beyond with the help of The Rolling Stones cryogenics expert.
U2 are travelling in the universe in the search for inter-galactic peace, whilst endeavouring to ensure capitalism (disguised as humanitarian concern) extends to all life forms.
Formation
They were formed by Irish Wonder Nerd The Bono (Bono), The (Heath L)Edger (also known as The Edge), Sting, Eminem, and Crash Bandicoot. Initially they tried to perform on the Limerick reading circuit of rural Ireland and Antarctica. Having no luck, and being outwitted at every turn by Daniel O'Donnell, they almost gave up music, (this made everyone extremely happy) to become mobile phone salespeople, despite the mobile phone not having been invented yet. However, after a lucky break due to a Daniel O'Donnell cancellation, they were spotted by someone they later killed and buried. Using his money, they recorded an album and rocketed to fame in 1893 at the famous bar in Dublin called The Stiff Little Finger. In 1895 they ran out of cash and immediately sold their future rights to Michael Jackson and Sony Records, a subsiduary of of Sony Ericsson Time Warner Google Aer Lingus.com.
Sting left in early 1977 to form Police Academy, leaving "U2" as a four-piece band. A reunion concert with him is predicted for September 2125 in New New York. No tickets have yet been sold, despite being on sale since 2001. (Note: fan club members still have yet to receive confirmation of seating).
The Irish troubles and U2
The members of U2 are the most noted IRA terrorists of all time. The Edge may or may not have been directly responsible for the Bloody Sunday massacre, whether they were involved or not incomparable to the fact that U2 records all contain references to the 'successful massacre,' and indeed, subliminal messages encouraging U2 fans to commit terror with Irish accents. Bono was and still is the root cause of the Irish troubles.
Through concerts and public appearances, U2 continues to bring global awareness and relief by often-neglecting the special people in their lives. In 2005 they played live at "Mutton-Aid 2005", in Bozeman, Montana. U2 performed an extremely long set of their classic tunes including:

Viagem a Dublin
O U2pt tem o prazer de anunciar que já foi decidida a data da viagem a Dublin, quantos dias serão assim como o orçamento escolhido. Gostaríamos de enfatizar que tentámos conciliar todas as opiniões expressas no questionário e esperamos que a escolha seja do vosso agrado e que todos os que responderam ao questionário estejam presentes nesta viagem.
Assim, aqui ficam os dados relativos à viagem:

Volta: 9 de Outubro de 2006 (Saída às 7h40)
Preço Passagem Aérea Aerlingus (taxas incluídas) = Eur. 211,00
Estadia:
Litton Lane Hostel – Entre os 17 Eur e os 21 Eur por pessoa e por noite (preços em camaratas para 8 ou 10 pessoas), com pequeno-almoço incluído. O preço varia consoante o nº de pessoas que fizerem a viagem e da altura de pagamento. (Há possibilidade de marcar quartos duplos por 35 Eur por pessoa e por noite.)
Resumindo, o preço da viagem e estadia não ultrapassará os 300 Euros, excepto no caso da marcação de quartos duplos, que foi a opção mais largamente desejada no questionário.
Em relação às inscrições, o prazo máximo para as inscrições será dia 5 de Junho e no acto da inscrição terá de ser pago um adiantamento de 50 Euros por inscrição. Este dinheiro servirá para garantir as pré-reservas quer do avião quer da estadia.
O pagamento da viagem será faseado. Prevemos o pagamento de 50 Euros por inscrição ao dia 5 de cada mês, excepto no mês de Outubro, que será feito o pagamento ao dia 1 do valor em dívida. Há a possibilidade de pagar o valor total de uma só vez.
Brevemente, anunciaremos mais pormenores quanto à realização da viagem bem como sobre o pagamento da mesma.

Filme sobre Hutchence pode ter voz de Bono!
Segundo avança o Contact Music, o filme sobre a vida de Michael Hutchence, antigo vocalista dos INXS, poderá vir a chamar-se Slide Away. Recorde-se que Slide Away é o nome de uma musica que foi interpretada pelo referido cantor a Bono. É ainda importante recordar que os dois tinham uma grande amizade, à qual Bono faz muitas vezes referência:
«Producers of the MICHAEL HUTCHENCE biopic are trying to convince PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN star JOHNNY DEPP to play the late INXS frontman. The film is being fast-tracked and most of the production will take place in the singer's homeland of Australia. In addition to Depp, film-makers are also looking to cast ERIC BANA, SIENNA MILLER, NAOMI WATTS and RACHEL GRIFFITHS in the movie. The film's tentative title is SLIDE AWAY, which refers to the duet Hutchence sang with U2's BONO, according to website MovieHole.net. Contrary to press reports that the late singer's family was not happy about the film, producers say Hutchence's estate is cooperating with the production. The movie's director NICK EGAN, who directed some of INXS's most popular videos, has been working with the singer's brother, RHETT on the film.»

Tendo em conta a UK Chart, foi elaborada uma lista com os 500 discos mais lucrativos de sempre no Reino Unido. Cada disco recebeu 100 pontos por cada semana no primeiro lugar no top, recebendo outra quantidade de pontos consoante o numero ocupado na tabela. Springsteen fala de Bono
Numa entrevista à revista Rolling Stone, Bruce Springsteen faz referência a Bono:
«When asked why he doesn't try to meet with politicians to influence them directly, like U2's Bono, Springsteen responds, "I probably don't have that confidence or the flat-out social ability to pull it off. It's the Irish in Bono that gets him in and to where he can survive anywhere if there are ears around." Big, nervous laugh. "I'm only about twenty-five or thirty percent Irish.»

Como já vem sendo tradição, a revista TIME pretende eleger as 100 personalidades mais influentes do Mundo. Apesar de Bono estar na capa e no ano passado figurar na lsita, este ano o seu nome não se encontra a votação.

A ex-esposa de Mick Jagger não aconselha ninguem a casar-se com uma estrela rock, a menos que seja...Bono:

McGuinness recebe prémio
Paul McGuinness recebeu ontem à noite em Londres, o Peter Grant Lifetime Achievement /Manager of the Year Award. Bono, Adam e Chris Blackwell entregaram o prémio:
«Paul McGuinness received the Peter Grant Lifetime Achievement /Manager of the Year Award in London last night. Bono and Adam joined a host of other industry friends as Chris Blackwell presented Paul with this prestigious award.
'Success has many fathers,' said Chris. 'But in U2 there's only one father - Paul McGuinness!' A series of video tributes to U2's manager came from well-known names in the music industry including Doug Morris, Louis Walsh, Jann Wenner and Jimmy Iovine.
The annual Roll of Honours Awards from the UK's Music Managers Forum was hosted by Paul Gambacini at the Hilton Hotel on London's Park Lane. Also honoured last night was another U2 friend, Garrett Lee, named as 'Producer of the year 2005'.
U2.Com caught up with Paul at the end of the evening: 'It's been a great night and this is a wonderful honour,' he said. 'And it's wonderful to see so many friends.'

ONE é a melhor
O canal VH1 desafiou os seus espectadores a elegerem a melhor musica de sempre. A vencedora foi a musica ONE dos U2, que destronou nomes como Bob Dylan, Beatles e David Bowie.
A nova versão desta musica com Mary J. Blige y U2, encontra-se neste momento em 3º lugar no top britânico. Aqui fica a lista das melhores 20 musicas de sempre.

Ali entrevistada pela Vanity Fair
Vanity Fair lançou uma edição especial intitulada Green com entrevistas a personalidades que tomaram iniciativas ligadas ao ambiente no mungo na moda. Ali, esposa de Bono, está entre os entrevistados:
«Ali Hewson, the driving force behind Edun Apparel (which she started last year with her husband, Bono, and New York designer Rogan Gregory), for bridging the worlds of fashion, environmentalism, and human rights by using organic products, paying workers a fair wage, and making sure workers are treated humanely."
Ali Hewson is gorgeously maternal, an alchemical mixture of dark, mysterious beauty (the corner of her lips, the orbit of her hips ...) and down-to-earth, minivan mum pragmatism. This is what makes her an ideal bridge between the worlds of fashion, environmentalism, and human rights--she's an Earth Mother, but not in the dated, patchouli-funk sense of the term. Music Rising dá frutos!
A Music Rising já ajudou mais de 1200 artistas afectados pelos furacão Katrina:
«Music Rising, a campaign to replace musician's instruments lost or destroyed in the Gulf Region hurricanes, today announced it has replaced over 1,200 instruments to date. Launched in November 2005, Music Rising has replaced these 1,200 instruments to musicians located in over 34 States from California to New York and in the Gulf Coast region.
Over half of the current Music Rising recipients are in Louisiana and instruments have been sent to over 54 towns within the State alone. Texas and Mississippi have the second and third largest recipient group. Music Rising clients have received a gamut of instruments from amps to guitars, to drums to saxophones and more. The current application and qualification process for musicians is handled by MusiCares, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping music people in crisis.»

Red Hot + Blue à venda dia 25!
Vai ser lançada uma nova versão do DVD Red Hot + Blue que conta com a colaboração dos U2 com Wim Wenders num video de «Night and Day»:
«On April 25th, 2006, Shout! Factory will re-issue RED HOT + BLUE on DVD for the first time, combined with a newly remastered CD in a special two-disc set.
This tribute to songwriting legend Cole Porter was one of the first major AIDS benefits in the music industry. The original CD, released in 1990, sold over a million copies and spent 24 weeks on the Billboard charts. And the TV special was broadcast around the world.
Sales of the album generated over 3 million dollars in revenue, which were donated to over 100 organizations around the world. As with the original release, all profits from sales of the re-issue will go to existing AIDS charities.
RED HOT + BLUE features ground breaking videos from such acclaimed directors as Jonathan Demme, Wim Wenders, Neil Jordan, Alex Cox and Jim Jarmusch. Many of these short films address the impact of AIDS on society in the late 80s, especially in the lives of artists and musicians who were particularly hard hit as the epidemic spread.
The project includes work from leading visual artists Keith Haring, Sue Coe, David Wojnarowicz, Barbara Kruger, Gran Fury and Jenny Holzer.»

«One Love, One Life»
Mary J Blige ficou maravilhada por interpretar "One" com os U2 no concerto de beneficiência a favor das vítimas do "Katrina", no passado Setembro, porque a música sempre lhe lembrou o 11/9. Blige ouviu a música pela primeira vez após os atentados de 2001 e, depressa se tornou um hino de Paz no seu espírito.
Segundo ela, a música fê-la chorar, porque vivemos num mundo em que não reconhecemos onde todos vivemos juntos e, não separados, independentemente da nossa raça, credo ou religião e, devido a essa estúpida divisão estamos sempre a culpar os outros por aquilo que nos acontece.

O site Cinema.com, revelou mais alguns pormenores sobre o filme «Across The Universe», no qual Bono participa:
«An original musical film, Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, the killing fields of Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. Adam and Susi looked more in love than usual when I saw them in January at the launch of a new fragrance by the Missoni fashion label in the Italian ambassador's stately residence in Grosvenor Square, London. I now know why. »

Chernobyl, 20 anos depois!
20 anos depois da tragédia, a organização Chernobyl Children Project, dirigida por Ali e Adi Roche, vai enviar 42 camiões de donativos avaliados em 3.5 milhões de dólares para as vitimas do acidente:
«VOLUNTEERS were yesterday packing trucks and ambulances with over €3 million worth of humanitarian aid that is bound for Belarus this weekend.
The 42-vehicle Chernobyl Children’s Project convoy, which includes 27 fully-equipped ambulances and 15 articulated trucks, will stretch three kilometres when it leaves Midleton, Co Cork, on Sunday.
Up to 90 aid workers will deliver aid to orphanages and hospitals across a 1,600km region in Belarus over the next 10 days.
This month marks the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Ms Roche and Ali Hewson, Bono’s wife, will fly out next week to join the convoy. They will present a special ambulance to the Red Cross to be used as a mobile thyroid monitoring unit that hopes to screen up to 500,000 people this year.»

Rocko a abrir U2
Segundo noticia o U2Log, a banda Rocko juntar-se-á aos Devils para abrir os concertos dos U2 no Hawai a datas a anunciar:
«Rocko and the Devils will still be opening for U2 in Hawaii!!!! The promoter is putting the last bits of information together before the official announcement of when the postponed dates will be rescheduled for later this year in Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. You can expect an announcement on U2.com, as well as this web site, in the near future, so please stay tuned.»

Naomi em incidente durante concerto dos U2
O jornal Boston Herald relata um incidente de Naomi Campbel durante um concerto dos U2 em Nova Iorque. Recorde-se que a modelo foi convidada pela banda para entrar no seu próximo videoclip e que é uma das ex namoradas de Adam Clayton:
«The moody mannequin had perched herself upon a barrier during a U2 concert in October, and blew a fuse when a security guard asked her to kindly climb down. “Campbell told the security officer that she was not going to get down and that he was a (expletive) (expletive),” a source told the News. “She then spat in the officer’s face.” According to the source, the abuse was witnessed by two other security guards, and a senior Garden official was called in to intervene. “(The official) explained to her that it is against Garden policy and the policy of the band’s security to sit on the barrier railing,” said the spy. After another heated exchange, the official threatened Campbell with ejection from the venue. Attending the concert as a personal guest of Bono - the lead singer of the Irish rock band - “she replied that she would like to see that,” reports the onlooker. The 35-year-old Britain-born beauty was not kicked out but the source said the guard filed a harassment complaint with cops.»

Artigo de Opinião - U2 em Fases

Sempre fico espantando quando pergunto a alguém “gostas de U2?” e recebo como resposta um simples não. Primeiro tento aprofundar para ver o que a pessoa conhece, qual o estilo de música preferido, por que não gosta. Às vezes uns respondem que é por não gostar de rock, outros por não gostarem de música pop, outros ainda por acharem que a ideologia da banda é falsa, até existem aqueles que os acusam de aproveitar o modismo para se promover. Estes me espantam. Modismo?!?! Faz 25 anos que eles são engajados! Que moda duradoura...
Porém, os que justificam não gostar de U2 por não gostarem de um determinado gênero musical me deixam com vontade de aprofundar o assunto, de apresentar alguma música do U2 que esteja dentro do género que a pessoa gosta. Claro que se for Forró ou Funk a coisa complica.
O U2 tem música para todos os gostos, qualquer momento e de todos os tipos. Mas, quando tenho que seguir o hábito humano de classificar as coisas, simplificando-as para as colocar dentro de uma nomenclatura, acabo dividindo a produção discográfica do U2 em fases.
Fase 1
De garotos (Boy) até o céu vermelho sangue (Under a Blood Red Sky).
A fase punk e rock mais pesado, profundo. Nota-se principalmente a poesia nas letras das músicas. Como o Bono não escrevia a música, mas improvisava-se a letra sobre a sonoridade do resto da banda, as letras abrem mais espaço para a interpretação e vão se tornando mais rebuscada com o passar do tempo.
Algumas músicas parece uma sucessão de imagens, como se estivéssemos a assistir o trailer de um filme, com trechos daqui é dali.
É fácil reparar como a sonoridade da banda é atmosférica. É mais do que ritmo, é uma sensação. Acho que isto lhes dá um toque de originalidade ao serem comparados com o que se produzia na época.
Fase 2
Do fogo inesquecível (The Unforgettable Fire) ao zumbido da América (Rattle and Hum).
Impossível chamar qualquer álbum desta fase de pop ou mesmo popular. Eles estão sempre um passo a frente da sua própria época. A sonoridade continua sendo emocional, a música é humor, não no sentido de engraçado, mas no sentido de estado espírito.
Há músicas e estilos para todos os gostos. Desde músicas com a assinatura já inconfundível da própria banda, grandes hits rock’n roll, country, gospel, blues, folk, baladas mais pops, têm de tudo, é só escolher
Depois de cruzarem os EUA e prestarem o seu tributo, a banda alcançou um patamar que poucos o fizeram e não se acomodou. Deram um tempo porque era hora de “sonhar tudo outra vez.”
Fase 3
Das guitarras hipersónicos (Achtung Baby) até “ao gosto de freguês” (Pop)
Façam um teste, ouçam In God’s Country e logo depois The Fly, o primeiro single do Achtung Baby. É impossível não notar a distância entre as duas sonoridades. Imaginem o choque de quem acompanhou a banda por mais de dez anos até que o Achtung lhes chegasse aos ouvidos. Imaginem o choque.
Esta é a minha fase preferida da banda, a mais progressista, mais revolucionária, mais chocante. No entanto, eles não se venderam ao mercado, o mercado teve que segui-los novamente. O falsete explorado pelo Bono no Achtung, talvez herdado do Prince, entrou no mercado, a parte dance explorada no Zooropa e os samplers pop do Pop, abriram caminhos que vieram a ser seguidos.
No meio de tudo isto, ainda a espaço para músicas de todos os gostos, sonoridades muito diferentes no mesmo álbum como Do You Feel Loved, Gone, Miami, Playboy Mansion e Please, todas tão semelhantes e ao mesmo tempo muito diferentes.
Isto tudo sem considerarmos a modernização nas apresentações ao vivo, com os excessos de informação representado na ZooTV e com os valores fúteis representados na PopMart. Tudo isto sem deixar de lado o humanismo. Trazer para dentro da Comunidade Européia os horrores de Sarajevo via satélite foi corajoso. Continuar a tocar depois de alguns depoimentos de partir o coração foi heróico.
Nota: para os que ainda não sabem, aquele palquinho menor que muitas bandas usam atualmente, o B-Stage ou palco B, foi “inventado” na ZooTV. Como uma forma de a banda se aproximar do público e dizer: “por trás de toda aquela parafernália e grandiosidade estão os mesmos quatro caras que vocês sempre conheceram.”
Fase 4
Sem deixar nada para trás (All that you can’t leave behind) até o desmantelamento da bomba (How to dismantle and atomic bomb)
Quem não ficou deliciado ao ouvir o aclamado retorno às raízes, All that you can’t leave behind? Acho que este sim é o álbum mais pop do U2. Pop no sentido de estar mais próximo do gosto popular. Não que isto torne o álbum ruim, ele é tão bom quanto os outros, no momento certo. Mas, sempre que o ouço imagino que eles pensaram assim: “desta vez, não vamos arrastar o público atrás de nós, abrindo-lhes os olhos para o que pode-se melhorar na música, vamos lhes dar exatamente o que eles podem ter de melhor dentro daquilo que se está fazendo agora.” Mas, o simples fato de fazer o melhor, já os coloca acima de quase todos.
A grande diferença que eu noto no How to dismantle está na introspectividade. É como se fossemos obrigados a olhar para dentro de nós mesmos, confrontar nossos medos, entender nossas tristezas, abraçar nossas alegrias.
Concluindo, acho difícil alguém afirmar que não gosta de nenhuma música do U2. São muitas e são muito diferentes entre si. Existem músicas para todos os gostos e todas as ocasiões, basta se manter com a mente aberta.
Nem cheguei a falar nos singles, há de tudo, até covers de outras bandas como Creedence e Rolling Stones. Também não falei no Passengers, mas ele não se enquadrava aí, afinal não é um álbum do U2, rs.

Cançoes do mar!
Bono, Gavin Friday, Maurice Seezer, Dave-id, Guggi e Andrea Corr, estiveram a trabalhar na semana passada com o produtor Hal Willner num estudio em Dublin, para a compilação de um cd intitulado «Sea Shanties» (Musicas do Mar). Até ao momento já foram gravadas seis musicas.

Bono entrega prémio a Geldof
Bob Geldof foi distinguido com o prémio IRMA - Irish Recorded Music Association Awards. Bono foi o responsável pela entraga do galardão:
«CHARITY mastermind Bob Geldof looked delighted as his "day job" earned him an honour, presented by U2 front man Bono.
The former Boomtown Rats frontman was presented with the IRMA award for his outstanding contribution to Irish music.
He told an audience including Bono and his wife Ali and Ronan Keating and wife Yvonne: "Thanks to the IRMA and the Rats, who were a great band." »

U2 ajudam à missa!
As musicas dos U2 têm sido utilizadas para celebrar as missas da igreja episcoal, segundo noticia o Yahoo:
«BONO has declared that he is not a man of the cloth, "unless that cloth is leather". But the words of the charismatic U2 front man are nevertheless ringing out from pulpits across the United States.
The Irish rock band's songs and lyrics are being used by the Episcopal Church in so-called "U2 Eucharists" as a means of attracting young people who relate to the group's social activism.
Earlier attempts by churches to connect to youth culture have usually involved ministers in open-toed sandals

strumming acoustic guitars and singing Kumbaya to the general embarrassment of all. Yet, in parishes from California to Maine, worshippers are flocking to hear U2 classics such as Beautiful Day, Pride and Peace on Earth rolled into a service of prayer.

The U2 Eucharist was devised by the Rev Paige Blair, a parish priest in York Harbor, Maine, and it has since spread through word-of-mouth and on clerical websites.
At All Saints' Church in Atlanta, Georgia, organisers had planned for 300 worshippers, and instead had to contend with 500, while at the Grace Episcopal Church in Providence, Rhode Island, as many people turned up for a Friday night U2 Eucharist as normally turn up on a Sunday morning.
While U2 songs are not yet listed in the Episcopal Church's authorised hymnal, Ms Blair believes it is only a matter of time. She said: "I seriously think the day will come. There's a gift they have in speaking to the human soul."
She came up with the idea after a sermon about the One Campaign, the Bono-backed initiative designed to alleviate global poverty and fight AIDS. She quoted equally from Bono and the Bible and included the lead singer's line: "Where you live should not determine whether you live or die."
Instead of a hymn, the service began with one of U2's earliest hits, Pride (In the Name of Love). As the music played, pictures of famous believers, including Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, flashed on a 10ft by 4ft screen behind the altar.
Other songs included in the service were Peace on Earth, which was inspired by a fatal bombing in Northern Ireland and which questions why God does not halt human suffering; during it, Bono sings: "Jesus, can you take the time to throw a drowning man a line." Also played was 40, in which Bono echoes the 40th Psalm, singing: "I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined and heard my cry."
Bono may favour black leather while on stage in front of an audience of millions, but to some believers, he can still act as a latter-day prophet, producing songs filled with Christian symbolism.
The Episcopal Church in the US has been among the first to recognise the band's power. A few years ago two of its priests edited a book of sermons based on U2 songs entitled Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog.
Yet Bono has provoked criticism from fans and even members of his own band for his close involvement with the US president, George Bush, a born-again Christian, whom he lobbied last year as part of the Make Poverty History campaign.
In February, he joined Mr Bush at the national prayer breakfast in Washington, and told the gathered clergy: "I'm certainly not here as a man of the cloth, unless that cloth is leather ... I'm the first to admit that there's something unnatural, something unseemly, about rock stars mounting the pulpit and preaching at presidents, and then disappearing to their villas in the south of France."

Bono sente-se «usado» por Berlusconi
«ROMA (Reuters) - O cantor Bono, do grupo U2, enviou ao primeiro-ministro italiano, Silvio Berlusconi, uma mensagem escrita reclamando do uso de uma foto sua em publicação que divulga as obras do governo a dez dias das eleições.
"Senhor Berlusconi, por mais que esteja lisonjeado de aparecer nessa publicação, também me sinto um pouco explorado", afirmou o artista na carta, informa o jornal italiano Corriere della Sera neste domingo.
A revista de 161 páginas publicada pelo partido Forza Italia foi enviada a milhões de residências italianas antes das eleições dos dias 9 e 10 deste mês. A publicação é repleta de fotos de Berlusconi, sempre sorridente,
discursando para multidões e conversando com líderes mundiais.
A foto de Bono, reconhecido ativista em defesa de nações carentes, aparece com a inscrição: "O artista irlandês é grato ao primeiro-ministro pelas ações do governo italiano em favor dos países pobres".
Na carta, Bono diz se lembrar da conversa com Berlusconi em que o primeiro-ministro prometeu cumprir a promessa do G-8 (grupo de países mais ricos) de aumentar as doações, o que levaria a Itália a duplicar os
desembolsos até 2010.
"Se o seu compromisso é verdadeiro e sua assinatura tem valor, então, o mundo quer saber como a Itália pretende atingir esse objetivo", afirmou Bono na carta.
No G-8, a Italia é o país que faz as menores doações em termos reais e, apesar das promessas, tem reduzido os desembolsos nos últimos anos.»
